AVTAR

Avatar

AvatarStarring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang

Directed James Cameron

Rating: ****

"Avatar" is a film that leaves you 'nishabd' (speechless).

James Cameron may have placed this story on a moon called Pandora with alien characters (known as Na'vi) that could have belonged to human race if not being double the size, a longer face, sharper features, blue body, white fluorescent marks on the face and tail at the back.

Still, emotions felt are just the same where Na'vis fight for their land, people, pride and right to live.

In a way, the story is no different from what locals may feel in any part of the world when outsiders make an attempt to make inroads into their land to gain hold of their resources. This is what happens to Na'vis as well when their peaceful existence is challenged with American troops entering their world to gain hold of precious minerals worth billions.

While they send one of their men (Sam Worthington) to Pandora by turning him into a Na'vi avatar so that he can understand the way of the natives and talk them into handing over their land, they also nurture a plan of their own.

With round of talks merely being a cover to understand how Na'vis feel and react, there is a deadly operation brewing in the background that would has a single point agenda of destroying and winning.

"Avatar" is an admirable effort because not even once viewers feel that it's an 'alien story' (pun intended) being told. There is a love story brewing between Sam's Na'vi avatar with the Pandora princess (Zoe Saldana) and soon he discovers an altogether new world. Literally. He wages a battle of his own with support from a handful of friends from 'sky people' along with tribe members and animals belonging to all shapes and sizes.

The story conveys that Cameron is a big fan of Bollywood films from the 60s and the 70s. Just like his last effort "Titanic" which was as Bollywood as it gets, even "Avatar" has quite a few Hindi film references if one starts plotting them on paper.

After watching "Avatar", the question of paramount importance is - what does one pick and what is it that should be left behind the experience that goes by the name of "Avatar"?

Does one admire Cameron for the sheer vision that he has put to tremendous use in the making of "Avatar"? Does one pick up each and every frame in the film and start bisecting it for every pixel which has been designed to perfection? Or does one silently nod in approval for the familiar world of love, brotherhood, attachment, greed, misunderstandings and the ultimate reunion where spirit of togetherness is the ultimate winner?

In short, "Avatar" is not a film to be seen and then talked about. It's one to be experienced.

Shah Rukh Khan gives the cold shoulder to Big B

Shah Rukh Khan gives the cold shoulder to Big B

Shah Rukh Khan gives the cold shoulder to Big BBollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan says he is still awaiting an acknowledgement for an SMS that he sent to Shah Rukh Khan on his birthday over a week ago.

"Nov 2 was Shah Rukh's birthday and I may have been the very early wisher to him, but he still has not acknowledged, " Bachchan posted on his blog.

" (His) mobile must have crashed with the number of wishes he had continued to receive throughout the day. Maybe I should send him a reminder. (It is) most unlike him. I wished Gauri and him for their anniversary a few days back and they responded. But why not now?"

The actors have featured together in films like "Bhootnath", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham", "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" and "Mohabbatein".

Earlier, cricketer M.S. Dhoni had ignored Amitabh's congratulatory message when he was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award.

Vidya Balan's Ishqiya is too abusive to be shown

Vidya Balan`s Ishqiya is too abusive to be shownDebutant director Abhishek Chaubey’s film, Ishqiya, has to be re-shot as the language of the film is too abusive. This is after a focus group told the team to re-edit the film. The producers, Shemaroo, have even asked Vishal Bhardwaj (who is Abhishek’s mentor) to be present when the film is being edited.

Starring Arshad Warsi, Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah, the film made some of the women in the audience uncomfortable.

It is about two bandits who fall in love with a widow while on the run and the consequences that arise out of the situation. The film’s theatrical trailer is out but other trailers will be out later. The film’s release date has apparently been shifted to mid-2010 but the film’s publicist assures it is still January 22nd, 2010.

Focus groups are a certain audience group that watches the film and gives their opinion on it. If they feel that there are some things that could be changed about the film, the changes are made. This is a common phenomenon in Hollywood but has only just entered Bollywood.

Mallika to give Johnny Depp sleepless nights!

Mallika to give Johnny Depp sleepless nights!A week after being invited to attend a private affair in Beverly Hills with the likes of Sean Penn, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Charlize Theron, Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly, Bollywood bombshell (and new Hollywood "It Girl") Mallika Sherawat was a special guest at legendary crooner Tom Waits' daughter Kellisimone's art opening in Santa Monica on Sunday night before being honoured at a private dinner in the Pacific Palisades by industry heavyweights.

At the art gallery, Miss Sherawat was seen hobnobbing with American star Johnny Depp, who told the bold beauty that he's ‘looking forward to seeing 'Hisss'.

Mallika quips, “It was a great pleasure meeting one of America’s greatest actors. He’s even better looking in person and to top it all, he told me that he is really looking forward to watching the Hisss trailer. I’m sure it’ll give him sleepless nights!”

Decked in a stylish black gown by BCBG, Mallika particularly enjoyed the artwork of Miss Waits whose current political theme highlighted world politicians in compromising positions. News of Mallika’s new American film project was recently announced; a romantic comedy set in the world of American politics, entitled "Love, Barack".

Also seen with Miss Sherawat at the art opening was Hollywood studio director Jesse Dylan who is developing another new mainstream commercial American film for the Indian star.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab KahaniBy Subhash K Jha

Starring: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi
Rating: ***

If you’ve ever wondered what on earth is on-screen chemistry here’s your one-stop all-purpose encyclopaedia on celluloid magic.

Fasten your ‘see’-it belts, as veteran filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi sheds all his Lajja, pulls out all stops to do a wacky goofy edgeless weightless comedy of characters who walk in and walk out of frames leaving nehind fumes of oldfashioned funnies.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is an airtight trapeze down that familiar romantic lane. The starting point seems to be Saawariya.

A wacky loud, opened-up rimless and ritous interpretation of Ranbir Kapoor’s character in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s opera on screen, Prem in Ajab Prem ….adores the fresh scrubbed girl nextdoor Jenny. But she loves someone else.

No it’s not Salman Khan, though in a tongue-in-cheek homage to tabloid realism Katrina meets her idol Salman who drawls to the roadside Romeo Ranbir, “You’re behaving as if you’re making my girlfriend or your own.”

Touche.

As in Saawariya and his more recent films Bachna Ae Haseeno and Wake Up Sid, a major part of the narrative becomes a showcase for Ranbir’s skills as an all-purpose actor who can pull out any emotional response to the most sterile dramatic stimuli.

In sequence after sequence, written to spotlight the young actor’s virtuosity Ranbir rises above the material given to him with glorious gusto.

Even while mouthing corny maudlin sappy dialogues about serving moong-dal ke pakaude to his beloved or plucking stars from the sky for her, Ranbir makes the trite seem just right.

His phenomenal talent gets radiant support from Katrina Kaif who gets better with every film. As the waif with a face so vulnerable and imploring you want to protect it from the harsh rays of evil sunlight, Katrina Kaif is at omce wholesome and haughty, feisty and flirtatious. She’s everyman’s dream-come-true, so why not Prem’s?

Would Ajab Prem… have worked as such a swimmingly sleek showreel for the besotted-boy-meets-the-absentminded-waif’s talew without the same lead actors ? The answer, frighteningly enough, is an emphatic no.

The noticeably over-done comic situations include a cartel of goofy goons who pop up towards the end to join the party. In one laboured sequence of comicality Ranbir must wear Katrina’s bodice and pretend he wears such clothes comfortably to avoid exposing Katrina’s concealment in his home.

The above scene defines the sense of inner-wear weariness that Ranbir and Katrina effectually avoid and alchemize into a watchable potpourri of parodic passion.

This is a rare film that surmounts and jumps over all the hurdles of clichéd plotting and corny dialogues on the sheer strength of its protagonists’ charm and grace. The film wears a bright bouncy sunny look. The location is an obviously papier-mache town filled with a benign bonhomie which doesn’t go beyond the rituals of surface-level romanticism.

And yet, several individual sequences come alive to convey a sparkling potency. Check out those sequences where Ranbir and Katrina stammer under emotional stress both individually and separately.

The couple in Kaminey seems suspiciously rehearsed in comparison. Indeeed, though the material provided to the lead reeks of second-hand emotions Ranbir and Katrina embrace those emotions and make them scrubbed.

Is there a better star-pair than Ranbir and Katrina in recent times? Maybe there is. But who cares. This one just makes you want to cuddle them.

I'm an 'Idiot'

I'm an 'Idiot': Aamir Khan mocks SRK one again!

I`m an `Idiot`: Aamir Khan mocks SRK one again! The battle between the Bollywood Khans seems to be never-ending. Everyone thought that Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan had set their differences aside, since they got together for the multiplex issue. But this seems to be far from true.

Aamir Khan, who just returned from France, was asked by a journalist if he too was questioned by the authorities for being a Khan. Aamir plainly said that such checks were common and that the SRK issue was being blown out of proportion.

He also added that people don’t check him because he is an idiot (referring to his film, Three Idiots) while SRK lands into trouble because he is intelligent (meaning that it was simply a publicity stunt). Salman too has earlier said that SRK’s airport check was merely for publicity.

TUM MILE

Tum Mile

Tum MileMusic Director: Pritam Chakraborty
Lyricists: Sayeed Quadri and Kumar
Singers: KK, Mohit Chauhan, Javed Ali, Neeraj Shridhar and Shafqat Amanat Ali
Rating:***1/2

Composer Pritam has churned out appealing tunes for the album of "Tum Mile", which stars Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan. The score is an all-male domain as none of the tracks features a female playback singer.

The title song "Tum Mile" has three versions and is crooned by different singers.

The first of the three has Neeraj Shridhar behind the microphone. It is a bouncy song that includes a few English lyrics as well. But this version doesn't impress much.

The next is a melodious mushy offering by Javed Ali. It is slower in pace but more appealing. The song succeeds in creating a romantic feel.

The third one is the rock version, which is equally nice and is sung wonderfully by Shafqat Amanat Ali. High on electric guitar, this version is very impressive and has the potential to be a chartbuster.

Next is "Dil Ibaadat", sung by KK. This soft-paced song is a signature Pritam composition.

This too has a rock version, which is better than the original. This one is more interesting and strikes a chord with the listener.

Next in line is a song with a Sufi influence, "Tu hi haqeeqat". Crooned by Javed Ali, the soulful number is a delight to hear owing to its lyrics and great orchestration.

"Iss Jahan Mein" by Mohit Chauhan has incorporated contemporary sounds. It is a nice, pleasing number.

Then there is "Oh meri jaan", a slow, poignant track. KK is the favourite for such mellow songs and he proves his prowess yet again with this number.

The soundtrack also entails an instrumental piece.

On the whole, Pritam has done a commendable job. All the songs are worth listening and is sure attract music buffs.

AATIF- we want to see u back

As the name ATIF ASLAM gets familiar it continues to enlighten, cogitate and provide people and many young hearted fans that are devoted to him, to dwell on his renowned artistry and unorthodox presence.

Atif Aslam was born on 12th march 1983 in wazirabad Gujranwala, a fertile land that has given birth to a lot of renowned leaders and intellectuals of Pakistan especially "Munno Bhayee and Ata-ul-Haq Qasmi amongst them now grows in amateur artist, Atif himself.

Being the youngest sibling of all his brothers, he still managed to be an excellent student. He was really laadla to his parents.

one of his sweet memories.

"One day we all friends were sitting out of the canteen after ending up all of our pocket money in the canteen but still every one was feeling a little hungry due to our small budgets. Suddenly a "Samosay Wala" baba came into picture who was holding a tray of crispy samosas on his head and all the friends had a bet k agar Atif is ka sir say samosay utha kar gaib ho gaya to aglay aik week ke liye us ko baqi sara friends treat dain gay in canteen.

I was pumped up by my friends and I decided to do this little stunt. I was walking quietly behind that samosay wala who cannot see behind and cannot imagine what is going to happen to him. I was very near to him, I took advantage of my height and long arm and I picked up three samosas from his tray with out any movement. Samosay walay ko kuch pata nahin chala peechay kiya hua.

I was about to turn after hearing the clap of my friends who were sitting behind me near the canteen until i saw a girl coming out of the library in front of me. She was the whole scene and started pointing at me while seeing that samosay wala. It was a freighting moment but I was quick enough to take a sharp turn into one of the streets of my college and vanished.

We shared those three samosas among all the friends later on at some other spot but they were amazing, probably the best samosas ever eaten. They paid the samosay wala later on but it was a sweet memory to him."

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan songs and Kishore Kumar were an inspiration to him. In 1998 at PAF College Lahore and sarogodha. Atif's friends forced and encouraged him to participate in a singing event on Independence Day. while Atif performed at that event on stage that evening people were thrilled to hear him out and therefore he won first place.

Atif recorded the first song in his voice named "AADAT" in Mekaal Hassans studios Lahore. Mekaal Hassans injected and fused his professionalism and experience in the song.

Atif decided to form a band named "Jal" which meant "Water" and proceed with his singing career. The Theme behind JAL, meaning water was that it was a feeling which was blue and deep, that if once anyone would fall into it they could not imagine themselves returning from it. Its depth was unlimited.

Blue; which was the mother of all colors and the strongest element of nature and life; being a drop of rain which fell from the blue sky and finally rest on to the ground which to most of us would not be the end of it; because as light would strike it, it would disperse into 7 different colors through which a Rainbow would take into shape and finally which give meaning to JAL itself, seven colors being born from one color blue. "Aik rung sey sath rung"

Atif first album "JAL PARI" was released on 20th july 2004 all over the nation by a leading record label called SOUND MASTER and IC RECORDS.
